This month I met a remarkable relative, 91 year-old Mrs. Alberta Penn Stallings of Hayward, California. When you meet a relative for the first time that you never knew existed (as I did), what would you say to her or him? What could you learn from her or him? What would it mean to you? For family?

Thanks for sharing the info on Ms Alberta! What would my Uncle Mose (Aunt Ruth's husband) be to her...a first cousin? Trying to make the connections. Also, I would love to meet her since she is living so close to me. Any chance of getting her phone number?

Not only was Cousin Alberta (then Alberta Penn) a graduate of the great Wilberforce University, I was looking in her college yearbook and discovered that she, the lovely, Miss Alberta Penn of Roanoke, Virginia, was chosen by popular vote "Miss Agriculture" at the college!!!!!! Now that is longtime, family leadership!

Very nice picture. I couldn't help but notice the secretariat in the background. I have the same one sitting in my den. It belonged to my grandmother Mary Helen Dow. It is a very nice antique piece that I am honored to [have].

Congratulations Keith, what a jewel of a find! There is nothing like family, and finding those we have lost along the way : )

Nice finding a long lost cousin, one day we can trace it all back to Jamaica. Lol

Hey Maria, I personally already have traced it back to Jamaica and Barbados, etc. (when we include our European roots AND our African roots). In other words, the same "black" Hyltons that you find down in the Islands and the "black" Hyltons here in the United States also trace their/our roots through the Hylton Castle "whites" in England". But here in the United States (at least with our Hylton-Joyce family), we have tightly maintained our excellent AND proud African family roots via our extensive family tree record with over 3,500 names. So meeting Cousin Alberta represents a long history. And connecting with "black or African" Hyltons (and Hiltons) thruout the world has also become a special mission for me personally. http://roanokerelatives.weebly.com/hylton-castle.html

The dedication to your family is inspiring. Instead of talking about it, you made a great effort to learn more about your relatives and celebrate their life. This labor of love is one of many Dr. Keith Hilton's legacies. Thanks for sharing and showing us the way.
