Are there more doctors in our family?

Are there more doctors in our family? If so, please let me know by posting a comment or two on our family blog page. I had a very nice conversation with LeQuan Hylton of Richmond, Virginia (January 2014), and have now added him to the list. He is working on his doctorate at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. No, everyone does not need to be a doctor, but at least our youth need to know they have options and role models. By the way, does anyone know the difference between a doctoral student and a doctoral candidate? Thoughts about this post and the importance of education?

Is Roanoke, Virginia a hick town, a country town or a big city?

Roanoke is not New York or Los Angeles, two cities that I have also lived, or Chicago, a city I became very familiar with when I was a graduate student in Illinois, but Roanoke still has a certain charm that makes it special.  Is it a hick town, a country town or a big city?  I give it a thumbs up, which is why I am doing my best to bring the following university to the Valley:

Wishing all our friends and family much continued success now that they have earned their high school and college degrees in 2013.  The journey is not over, but it must feel good today!
Ethel (Ellie) Hylton (pictured left) -- Top graduating student at the top university in the world. Ellie graduated from Harvard in May, and won the prize for the graduating Harvard senior with the highest grade point average (GPA).  She also graduated summa cum laude, Phi Betta Kappa, and won two important college prizes for her senior thesis. Ellie's parents, Keith N. Hylton and Maria O'Brien Hylton, both law professors at Boston University, are also Harvard graduates. Ellie is also the niece of Soledad O'Brien, a Harvard graduate and CNN news personality.

As a family member, how successful would you like INVR Standards / HHEW to be?

When I (KOH) formed INVR Standards / HHEW as a media, education and leadership consortium, I wanted it to be something all of my family members and friends would not only be proud of, but also like to be a part of. Please take a look through the INVR / HHEW website and let me know where you think you could play a role.  Or where it falls short.

Is there a doctor in the house or family?

I am compiling a list of relatives (living and deceased) on both sides of my family (Hilton/Hylton/Helton, Paige, Reynolds, Richardson) with earned doctorates (e.g. PhD, Ed.D., J.D., D.O., M.D., ThD, D.D.S., O.D., D.C., Pharm.D.). There are others, but all are considered terminal degrees; the highest degree a person can earn in his/her disciple -- education, medicine, law, religion, etc.  I want our youth to see how high they can rise!  I also want them to view us as resources.  Please send the name(s) of any “doctor” relatives to our family website's blog page (http://roanokerelatives.weebly.com/qa-blog.html). http://roanokerelatives.weebly.com/qa-blog.html.  Also, if you are currently a student pursuing a terminal (doctoral) degree, let us know.

If you would like to see who some of these relatives are, please click here.

Who are famous African-Americans (past and present) with roots in the Roanoke Valley?

Roanoke, Virginia is often called the "Star City". Who are famous African-Americans (past and present) with roots in the Valley? The first ones that come to mind for me (KOH) are Booker T. Washington (from Franklin County - legendary world leader), Oliver Hill (Roanoke - late civil rights attorney), Oscar Micheaux (Harlem Renaissance filmmaker), Charles "Big Dog" Thornhill (Roanoke - '60s college football) and Al Holland (Roanoke - major league baseball), but there must be many others before them and since from all throughout the Valley (including the surrounding counties) - and from all professions. We would like to post this so that the world will see our stars! This will be compiled, updated regularly and listed at: http://roanokerelatives.weebly.com/roanoke.html.  This list is of all African-Americans from the Valley, not just relatives.

In 2012 would you personally want to attend a college that has less than 20 African-American freshmen?

In 2012 there are thousands of colleges and universities to choose from, and most of those colleges offer fields of study (majors and minors) that should make you employable. With that said, would you personally want to attend a college or university in 2012 that has less than 20 African-American freshmen (freshpersons)?  The University of the Pacific in Stockton, California needs to now demonstrate a better result, but it is not alone unfortunately.

Did you know that African-Americans are perhaps the nation’s largest or second largest ethnic group, surpassing the other six largest ethnic groups; English-Americans, Irish-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Italian-Americans, Cuban-Americans and German-Americans?

Would you hire yourself based on your own Internet image?

As you know, many businesses now, before hiring people, also check us out on Facebook, on LinkedIn, on Youtube, etc. When was the last time you “googled” your own name on the Internet or did a keyword search about yourself? For myself, I just typed in “Keith Orlando Hilton”. What did you find when you typed your name? And would you hire yourself based on what you found? :)

Feel free to leave comments (even corrections) on any of these posts (old and current ones) at any time.

If we don't record our family history, it gets lost.  Your comments are important.

I will do periodic posts, but this blog is really an open forum for visitors to this site.

Although this website was created by moi (Keith Orlando Hilton), I prefer that it now be ran by a committee of relatives. Interested? Especially young computer savvy young people.
